Don't Forget to Clean Your Tongue

When it comes to oral hygiene, most people focus on teeth. However, it is vital you clean your tongue every day as well. There are a variety of reasons why this is important, and you will be glad you have taken care of every structure within your mouth next time you visit the dentist.

Why Is It Important?

You probably already know that bacteria and food particles build up on your teeth, which is why you need to brush them twice a day to remove those substances. However, bacteria can also develop on people’s tongues. Bacteria get caught between the papillae, which are the small bumps that cover tongues. Mucus is also able to build up around the muscle, trapping bacteria and keeping it there for extended periods of time. Even after you brush your teeth, bacteria from your tongue can make its way back to your teeth, making your brushing all for nothing.

How Should It Be Cleaned?

Your dentist can provide you with additional information about the proper way to clean all your oral structures. However, there are primarily two ways to clean tongues, and they involve scraping and brushing. You will need a special tool to scrape. Basically, all you need to do is position the scraper toward the back of the muscle and gently glide it over the surface. This removes all the mucus and bacteria that have accumulated on top. If you prefer to use a tool you already have, then you can simply use your toothbrush. After you have brushed your teeth thoroughly, you can gently clean the remaining oral structures, which include your inner cheeks and the roof of your mouth.

It is very simple to clean a tongue, yet many people still neglect to do it daily. Your dentist is bound to notice if you are not taking proper care of all your oral structures, so start cleaning every part of your mouth for a more comprehensive solution.
